February 27th – October 3rd at the Barbados Museum & Historical Society.
“The BMHS is pleased to announce the exhibition Am I a Bad Girl, Nanny? Cries of Innocence and of Experience!
In this new body of work, internationally recognised Barbadian artist Joscelyn Gardner engages with two ambrotypes in the museum’s historic photograph collection as sites of fragments, silences, and ethical tension. Through lithography, embroidery, and layered material processes, she imagines a visual world seen through the eyes of Eva Douglas Richards, the child in the care of Harriet Thomas Weekes, depicted in a rare shared portrait from the 1850s.
This exhibition invites us to reflect on the complexities of colonial legacies shaped by care, power, and intimacy.”
