SUMMARY:Am I a bad girl\, Nanny? Cries of Innocence and Experience
DESCRIPTION:February 27th – October 3rd at the Barbados Museum & Historical Society.\n\n\n\n\n\n“The BMHS is pleased to announce the exhibition Am I a Bad Girl\, Nanny? Cries of Innocence and of Experience!\n\n\n\n\n\nIn this new body of work\, internationally recognised Barbadian artist Joscelyn Gardner engages with two ambrotypes in the museum’s historic photograph collection as sites of fragments\, silences\, and ethical tension. Through lithography\, embroidery\, and layered material processes\, she imagines a visual world seen through the eyes of Eva Douglas Richards\, the child in the care of Harriet Thomas Weekes\, depicted in a rare shared portrait from the 1850s.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis exhibition invites us to reflect on the complexities of colonial legacies shaped by care\, power\, and intimacy.”\n\n\n\n\n\nFor more information\, please contact info@barbmuse.org.bb

SUMMARY:Harriet Thomas Weekes: The Right to Opacity
DESCRIPTION:Harriet Thomas Weekes: The Right to Opacity at The Barbados Museum & Historical Society. Feb 27th – Oct 3rd.“Announcing the exhibition Harriet Thomas Weekes: The Right to Opacity\, which engages two rare photographic records of a Black Barbadian woman who lived from enslavement into legal freedom (1815–1897).Rather than seeking to tell her story in full\, this exhibition embraces what cannot be fully known\, honouring Harriet without reducing her to the limits of the colonial archive.Through photographs\, documents\, and community voices\, visitors are invited into a space of listening\, reflection\, and shared meaning-making\, where presence matters more than completeness.”For more information\, please contact info@barbmuse.org.bb

SUMMARY:Of Barbados - The Art of Arthur Atkinson and Sir Henry Fraser
DESCRIPTION:Caribbean Brushstrokes is proud to present “…Of Barbados” — The Art of Arthur Atkinson and Sir Henry Fraser\, bringing together two distinguished Barbadian artists whose work has been deeply shaped by the island they call home.\nArthur Atkinson has been exhibiting since 1968\, moving boldly through representation\, abstraction\, super realism and stylised social commentary while consistently returning to Barbados and things Bajan for inspiration. With exhibitions across the Caribbean and internationally\, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Visual Arts in 2008. \nSir Henry Fraser brings an equally extraordinary perspective. Physician\, author\, architectural historian\, broadcaster and artist\, his expressive landscapes and studies of Barbados sit alongside a lifetime devoted to documenting and protecting the island’s heritage. A former President of the Barbados National Trust\, he was knighted in 2014. \nTogether\, their work offers more than views of Barbados. It is Barbados observed\, remembered\, interpreted and preserved through two remarkable artistic lives.Opening Night: Wednesday\, September 16 at 6:30pm\nMeet the Artists: Saturday\, September 26 | 2–4pm\nClosing Date: Friday\, October 9

SUMMARY:Caribbean Atlantean: A solo-exhibition by Risée Chaderton-Charles
DESCRIPTION:“NOW OPEN! Come on down to the Barbados Museum & Historical Society and experience Caribbean Atlantean\, a solo exhibition by Barbadian artist Risée Chaderton-Charles.\n\n\n\nWhat if those who were cast into the sea did not disappear? Caribbean Atlantean invites audiences to reconsider Barbados’ history\, identity and the stories we carry into the future.\n\n\n\nDrawing from research into Barbados’ colonial archives\, Risée Chaderton-Charles transforms one of the Atlantic world’s greatest sites of historical trauma into a place of survival\, memory\, and possibility.\n\n\n\nShipping records\, plantation ledgers\, insurance claims\, and newspapers\, documents that once reduced African lives to property\, are reclaimed within luminous underwater worlds inhabited by Black Caribbean merpeople\, mothers\, children\, guardians\, and ancestral beings. Rather than accepting these archives as the final account of history\, Chaderton-Charles asks a powerful question: What if those who were cast into the sea did not disappear?\n\n\n\nIn this imagined Atlantic world\, histories of trauma are reimagined through survival\, memory and possibility. The exhibition asks us to look beyond the archives as the final account of the past and consider the power of imagination in shaping the stories we tell about ourselves.\n\n\n\nAs Barbados reflects on 60 years of Independence and five years as a Republic\, Caribbean Atlantean offers a hopeful vision of Caribbean identity\, rooted in resilience\, imagination and the freedom to create new stories.\n\n\n\nThere’s more beneath the surface. Swipe and scan the QR code to explore the exhibition catalogue.\n\n\n\nCome explore Caribbean Atlantean and encounter a different vision of the Caribbean beneath the surface.”
