SUMMARY:The Great Exposition by Ewan Atkinson- Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:You’re invited! Join us this Sunday\, September 6\, to experience the opening of Ewan Atkinson’s Stories from the Neighborhood: The Great Exposition\, at 6 PM at the Queen’s Park Gallery.\n\n\n\nAt the centre of the exhibition is The Great Exposition\, a world’s fair-inspired event intended to showcase The Neighbourhood’s cultural\, scientific and commercial achievements to a global audience. It was expected to build international awareness and respectability\, stimulate tourism\, strengthen a developing national identity and foster local pride. However\, the event never took place.\n\n\n\nThrough 24 artworks\, documents and objects drawn from The Neighbourhood Project archives\, Atkinson pieces together the fractured story of the failed exposition and offers insights into how and why it never happened. In doing so\, the collection transforms personal stories into cultural testimony while examining the production of meaning\, the tensions between communal and individual identity and the desire to belong.\n\n\n\nPreviously exhibited at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art in New Orleans as part of Prospect.6 and the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver\, the work now returns home to the Barbadian community that inspired it and helped make its creation possible.\n\n\n\nExhibition viewing hours\, until September 26:\n Mondays to Saturdays\n10 AM to 6 PM\n Queen’s Park Gallery\n Admission is free\n\n\n Please note that this exhibition is rated A and is for adults only.

DESCRIPTION:Caribbean Brushstrokes is proud to present “…Of Barbados” — The Art of Arthur Atkinson and Sir Henry Fraser\, bringing together two distinguished Barbadian artists whose work has been deeply shaped by the island they call home.\nArthur Atkinson has been exhibiting since 1968\, moving boldly through representation\, abstraction\, super realism and stylised social commentary while consistently returning to Barbados and things Bajan for inspiration. With exhibitions across the Caribbean and internationally\, he was honoured with the Lifetime Achievement Award in the Visual Arts in 2008. \nSir Henry Fraser brings an equally extraordinary perspective. Physician\, author\, architectural historian\, broadcaster and artist\, his expressive landscapes and studies of Barbados sit alongside a lifetime devoted to documenting and protecting the island’s heritage. A former President of the Barbados National Trust\, he was knighted in 2014. \nTogether\, their work offers more than views of Barbados.
